Transitions in Energy and Climate Solutions Practice

The nation is amid a historical transition to decarbonization and a new energy economy, and Jenner & Block is helping clients develop and execute forward-thinking approaches to the enormous business risks, opportunities, and reporting demands.

Our Transitions in Energy and Climate Solutions (TECS) Practice combines unprecedented industry experience with a deep commitment to partnering with our clients to find value-adding solutions to their most challenging energy problems and deepest held climate goals. We have developed innovative energy and sustainability solutions for leading utilities, universities, Native American Tribes, emerging cleantech startups, and major corporations. Our lawyers bring not only their experience but also the diverse perspectives borne of the varied roles in which they have served, including business-side executive, general counsel, lead outside corporate and regulatory counsel, regulator, and project developer.

Our TECS team has extremely deep and diverse experience in the substantive areas of regulatory and energy law that most often arise when regulators assess proposed transactions or seek to impose conditions and commitments on them. We have led transactions as general counsels of major publicly-traded energy companies and obtained regulatory approvals for significant utility deals including mergers, divestitures, sales, and purchases of asset portfolios – quarterbacking the most complicated and consequential cases before state utility commissions and FERC. Where necessary, we defended those approvals and the underlying transactions in court, in collateral attacks and on appeal, including in appeals to state supreme courts. As part of this work and where necessary, we collaborate seamlessly with local counsel to assemble an integrated team of client counsel, deal counsel, board counsel, and local counsel. We develop winning strategies and effectively execute them.

We bring a diverse and multidisciplinary team to help our clients. Formulating and executing new strategic and regulatory goals requires lawyers who think creatively and bring a variety of perspectives to the discussion. Jenner & Block’s TECS Practice brings together diverse lawyers in our Energy/Regulatory, Telecom/Broadband, Corporate/M&A, Environmental, Government Strategies, and Litigation/Appellate Practices to provide integrated advice and counsel across the business and regulatory spectrum. Our partners include a former FERC commissioner, former high-level officials at the US Department of Justice, the former chief of staff to the California governor, two former general counsel of one of America’s largest energy companies, and three former US Supreme Court clerks.

The launch of this practice in July 2022 received media attention, including from Law360.
