Katharine R. McLaughlin is a partner in the firm’s Litigation Department and a member of the Professional Responsibility Practice group. Ms. McLaughlin has robust experience defending lawyers and law firms in complex legal malpractice litigation, pre-suit investigations and resolutions and partnership disputes. In addition to professional negligence claims, she defends lawyers against claims of fraud, misrepresentation and aiding and abetting breach of fiduciary duty, among others. She also advises law firms with respect to complex legal ethics issues. Ms. McLaughlin has been named an Illinois Super Lawyer “Rising Star” in the area of Professional Liability for 2019, 2020, and 2021.
Ms. McLaughlin is a trial lawyer with a broad range of complex commercial litigation experience. She has contributed to important victories in multi-million dollar contract disputes, TCPA litigation, putative class actions and shareholder disputes in closely held companies. She has second-chaired two trials and has experience in all aspects of trial practice. Ms. McLaughlin has represented clients in both state and federal court, at both the trial and appellate levels, and in high-stakes internal investigations, arbitrations and mediations.
In addition to her private practice, Ms. McLaughlin maintains an active and varied pro bono practice that has included criminal appeals, civil rights disputes and immigration matters, among many others.
Ms. McLaughlin is admitted to practice in the state of Illinois. She is a member of the Chicago Bar Association and the American Bar Association, and she recently served as co-chair of the Young Lawyers Programming Committee of the Women’s Bar Association of Illinois. She also serves on Jenner & Block's Hiring Committee and is a member of the firm's Women's Forum.
