Representative Matters

  • Persuaded U.S. Department of Justice, Antitrust Division, to decline to file criminal charges against large, Japan-based multinational corporation in high-profile federal criminal antitrust investigation.
  • Obtained “second-in” leniency for Japanese corporations in large-scale investigations and prosecutions by U.S. Department of Justice, Antitrust Division, of alleged antitrust violations.
  • Represented individual Japanese nationals and U.S.-based employees in large-scale federal criminal antitrust investigations.
  • Obtained injunctive relief and settlement protecting closely held Chicago-area corporation’s trade secrets from being disclosed as a result of a complex set of asset purchase and related transactions.
  • Defended criminal perjury charges against a recanting witness and obtained executive clemency for the witness in a prosecution that 23 prominent former judges and prosecutors said was threatening to discourage truthful recantations.
  • Obtained dismissal with prejudice of all claims in class action litigation brought by an Illinois municipality against a major publicly regulated utility over alleged service interruptions.
  • Represented U.S. corporation and employees in India-based criminal investigation and parallel U.S. civil litigation in which all claims were dismissed as result of document and discovery fraud unearthed by Jenner & Block. 
  • Conducted internal investigation into an educational program at a major U.S. university amid sensitive First Amendment and subpoena compliance considerations.
  • Led internal investigation into insider criminal fraud at a major Chicago bank, obtained civil attachment of $7 million in fraud proceeds for repatriation to the client bank, and referred evidence of criminal “structuring” violations for successful federal criminal prosecution.
  • Led internal investigation in connection with federal criminal tax investigation into U.S. corporation’s transfer pricing practices.
  • Led internal investigation into U.S. aircraft manufacturer’s  compliance with state and federal environmental laws.
  • Led internal investigation into misallocation of corporate funds by officer and director of middle-market retailer.
  • As a federal prosecutor, obtained the nearly unheard-of return of three young U.S. citizen children held illegally in Jordan and brought prosecution under the International Parental Kidnapping Crime Act.
  • Co-prosecutor in the largest Endangered Species Act prosecution in U.S. history, involving the unlawful killing and sale of tigers, leopards, and other protected animals.
  • Served under court appointment as lead defense counsel in complex federal criminal narcotics trial and obtained rare acquittals on multiple narcotics counts, then briefed and argued the appeal of unprecedented appeals court intervention in the trial. 
  • Represented Indiana state officials and a Chicago-area immigrant rights organization in separate voting rights litigation matters over, respectively, keeping early voting stations open during the 2008 presidential general election cycle, and allowing equal access to the polls in minority communities on election day.
  • Represented overseas-based receivers appointed to recover assets for UK bankruptcy estate in $60-million telemarketing fraud.
  • Represented high school students pro bono against school administrators’ efforts to censor student newspapers.
  • Assisted in Jenner & Block’s representation of large U.S. air carrier in class-action litigation over changes to airline’s frequent flier program.
