Jenner & Block Partners Steven B. Fabrizio and Gianni P. Servodidio authored “The New Land Grab: More Top-Level Domains to Come?” as the June article for the Creative Content group's monthly column “Content Matters” which appears in the Los Angeles Daily Journal and the San Francisco Daily Journal.  In this month's article, the authors discuss the issues that trademark owners will face when, as expected, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), a non-profit corporation that administers top-level domains, votes later this month to substantially expand the number of top-level domains (i.e., .com, .net, or .gov) available for registration.  The authors discuss the enhanced risks to brand owners that their marks will be registered as domain names by unscrupulous “cyber-squatters” and go on to offer possible options for the trademark community to consider as it assesses how to respond to ICANN’s new program.
