In this article, Jenner & Block Partner Dawn L. Smalls offers her advice to young people early in their careers. As she explains, success in your career rests on a three-legged stool: The first leg of the stool is credentials; the second leg is experience; and the third leg is one’s network.  “You need all three to have a strong foundation that allows you to succeed in your career as well as manage the setbacks that will inevitably come,” she writes. “Just like it’s your job to keep up on the latest developments in your field of expertise, it’s your job to keep up with your network. Not because you need or will need anything from them, but because it is the strength of your network that will sustain you over time.”
