Scogland examine the details of the “contentious and adversarial” National Football League retirement plan and explore the lessons learned from recent contretemps over NFL retiree benefits generally.  Using the paradigmatic example of a successful ERISA lawsuit brought by the estate of a late Pittsburgh Steelers lineman, Messrs. Martin and Scogland encourage plan administrators to consider the risk of “collateral damage” such as unwanted media attention when administering a high profile retirement plan.
