“Expect More ‘Ransomware’ Attacks in 2016,” Daily Journal

In this article, Jenner & Block Partner Mary Ellen Callahan and Special Counsel Heidi L. Wachs examine “ransomware” attacks – that is, a type of cyberattack in which the hackers hold data hostage to demand a ransom.  Using the recent ransomware attack of Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center as an example, the authors describe ransomware and offer strategies on how companies can combat such attacks.  “Ransomware usually cannot be hacked to override the encryption,” they conclude.  “Therefore, it is important to protect your crown jewels through good cybersecurity controls and regularly backing up your data. That way, if you are the unfortunate victim of a ransomware attack, and your data is lost, you have a backup copy.”
