In this article, Jenner & Block Partners Sara Tonnies Horton and Craig C. Martin explore the interplay between new biotechnologies and patent laws.  The authors discuss emerging scientific breakthroughs that can allow specialized 3D printers to create human organs.  They focus on the question of whether scientists and companies who manufacture organs such as ears and blood vessels should be allowed to obtain patents on these objects even though they already exist in nature.  They analyze relevant cases and arguments for and against allowing these patents.
