NEW YORK, December 11, 2015 – Jenner & Block is pleased to announce that Partner Susan J. Kohlmann has been named office managing partner of the firm’s New York office, effective January 1, 2016. 

Ms. Kohlmann, a litigator in the Content, Media & Entertainment Practice, chair of the firm’s Trademark, Advertising, and Unfair Competition Practice and chair of the firm’s Diversity & Inclusion Committee, joined the office in 2007.  She is a member of Jenner & Block’s Policy Committee, the firm’s governing body, and is a member of the New York office’s Pro Bono Committee.  She assumes leadership of the office as it celebrates its 10th anniversary.

Ms. Kohlmann will assume the role currently held by Partner Richard F. Ziegler, who has led Jenner & Block’s New York office for the past eight years.  Co-chair of the firm’s International Arbitration Practice, Mr. Ziegler will focus on expanding the firm’s arbitration capabilities in conjunction with the firm’s new London office.  He has been a member of the Policy Committee.

The New York office opened in November 2005 with fewer than 10 lawyers.  Today the office has nearly 70 lawyers, advancing the firm’s key practice areas, including internal investigations/white collar defense; content, media and entertainment litigation; complex commercial and securities litigation; international arbitration; restructuring and bankruptcy; and M&A and capital markets transactional matters. 

In addition to Ms. Kohlmann, a copyright litigator who represented Viacom in its landmark lawsuit against YouTube, and Mr. Ziegler, a senior litigator now focusing his practice on international arbitration, the firm’s New York office includes the following partners: Neil M. Barofsky, the former special inspector general of TARP and author of “Bailout” who currently serves as the government-appointed monitor of Credit Suisse; Katya Jestin and Anthony S. Barkow, former Eastern District of New York and Southern District of New York Assistant U.S. Attorneys;  Jeremy M. Creelan, whom the New York Law Journal featured as a “Lawyer Who Leads by Example” and was special counsel to Gov. Andrew Cuomo for Public Integrity and Ethics Reform; and Andrew H. Bart, a renowned entertainment litigator who recently successfully defended the music star Jay Z in a copyright suit challenging his hit song “Big Pimpin’.”  The most recent partner to join Jenner & Block’s New York office, Richard Levin, had chaired the restructuring practice at Cravath, Swaine & Moore.

The office’s transactional partners include Uri Doron, who focuses on Scandinavian-based cross-border matters, and Kevin T. Collins and Martin C. Glass, who are acting as securities counsel for the recently announced $1.9 billion acquisition by Snyder’s-Lance of Diamond Foods, Inc.

Jenner & Block’s strong commitment to pro bono and public service is reflected in its selection as the number one Pro Bono Law Firm in the United States six times in the past eight years by The American Lawyer magazine.  The New York office is a strong contributor to this commitment of the firm.  Its many pro bono matters include an important victory in a RICO class action on behalf of more than 20,000 low-income tenants against a major private landlord; representing the first Guantanamo Bay detainee to agree to plead guilty in exchange for more lenient treatment; and acting as co-counsel in a class action against the New York City Transit Authority challenging inadequate language access services in the operation of its federally mandated Access-A-Ride program for disabled New Yorkers.


An experienced litigator in our Content, Media & Entertainment Practice, Ms. Kohlmann counsels clients on a wide variety of complex matters, including copyright, trademark and trade secret disputes.  She has also represented companies in various class action and other complex commercial matters.  In addition to her extensive experience in jury and bench trials and arbitration proceedings, Ms. Kohlmann has extensive experience briefing and arguing appeals in the New York appellate courts and several federal circuit courts.

Ms. Kohlmann is an accomplished copyright litigator with a number of high-profile wins to her name, often on behalf of entertainment, advertising and digital media clients.  She currently represents the Estate of Elaine Steinbeck, the late wife of renowned novelist John Steinbeck, and all of its beneficiaries, in a copyright dispute with Steinbeck’s biological son and granddaughter.  She represented Viacom in Viacom v. YouTube, one of the most significant copyright cases of our time.

Ms. Kohlmann has served as a member of the New York City Bar's Executive Committee, Chair of its Committee to Enhance Diversity, and as a member of its Nominating Committee.  She is Vice Chair of Legal Services NYC and also a member of the boards of the New York Lawyers for the Public Interest and the City Bar Justice Center.   She was previously a New York office managing partner at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP.
