A pro bono team of Jenner & Block attorneys headed by partner Jodie Kelley achieved last year a rare trial court reversal and victory in the DC Circuit Court of Appeals challenging the constitutionality of various government official’s misstatements which, the Firm’s client, Jennifer Harbury alleged, were designed to prevent her from seeking judicial redress related to the 1992 disappearance of her late husband, Efrain Bamaca-Velasquez, a Guatemalan citizen and a leader in a rebel organization there. The government appealed the closely-watched “right to access” ruling to the U.S. Supreme Court. And Ms. Harbury, a lawyer, asked to argue the case before the Justices herself. The unusual step - taken against the advice of Jenner & Block - made headlines in several legal newspapers across the country, including The Legal Intelligencer, all of which acknowledged the Firm’s tireless efforts in this pro bono case. Among the many attorneys in Jenner & Block’s D.C. who assisted Ms. Kelley in the Harbury case was Cindy Robertson, Matt Hersh, Olivier Sylvain, Erin Albritton and Jae Lee.
