Seven DC Partners Named “Stars of the Bar” by Washingtonian Magazine

Seven partners in Jenner & Block’s Washington, D.C. office were recently named to Washingtonian Magazine’s “800+ Stars of the Bar” list.  David A. Churchill, W. Jay DeVecchio, Matthew L. Jacobs, Lorelie S. Masters, Kevin P. Mullen, Thomas C. Newkirk and Paul M. Smith were included in the publication’s 2011 guide to “Washington’s best legal minds in 30 categories.”

Messrs. Churchill, DeVecchio and Mullen were recognized in the “Government Work” area, as “leading government-contracts attorneys” who “help companies bid for contracts and deal with details of working with Uncle Sam.”  Mr. Churchill and Mr. DeVecchio are Co-Chairs of the Firm’s Government Contracts Practice.  Mr. Mullen is a member of the Practice and has a niche practice in the emerging areas involving homeland security and bio-defense contracting, particularly risk and liability mitigation for anti-terrorism technologies.  All three are consistently recognized by Chambers USA, among other publications and directories, as being among the top government contracts attorneys in the country.

Mr. Jacobs and Ms. Masters were noted as insurance lawyers who “can help work out…differences” when “insurance providers and policyholders sometimes don’t get along,” in the publication’s “Insurance Assurance” category.  Mr. Jacobs is a partner in the Firm’s Insurance Litigation and Counseling and Reinsurance Practices.  He has been focusing exclusively on insurance coverage issues for the past 25 years and has been recognized by clients and peers in Chambers USA Client’s Guide for Insurance and the Legal Media Group’s Guide to the World’s Leading Insurance and Reinsurance Lawyers.  Ms. Masters is also a partner in the Insurance Litigation and Counseling Practice.  Chambers & Partners USA has named her one of the country’s leading Insurance Law attorneys since 2005.  In 2010, Law360 identified her as one of the “10 Most Admired Insurance Attorneys.”

Mr. Newkirk was mentioned in the “Sense of Securities” area, with the magazine stating, “If the Securities and Exchange Commission is asking tough questions, you’ll want one of these lawyers working for you.”  Mr. Newkirk is Co-Chair of the Firm’s Securities Litigation and Enforcement Practice.  Drawing on his 19 years of experience with the Securities and Exchange Commission, he represents companies and their leaders in confidential investigations related to such issues as accounting, disclosure, insider trading, and the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.

Mr. Smith was included in “The Supremes” category, of whom the publication said, “Few are more skilled at persuading the highest court in the land than these Supreme Court advocates.”  Mr. Smith is Chair of Jenner & Block’s Appellate and Supreme Court Practice and Co-Chair of the Media and First Amendment and Election Law and Redistricting Practices.  He has had an active Supreme Court practice for nearly three decades, including oral arguments in 14 Supreme Court cases involving matters ranging from free speech and civil rights to civil procedure.  In 2010, The National Law Journal named Mr. Smith one of the "Decade's Most Influential Lawyers.”
