The Burton Foundation presented Jenner & Block with two awards for “excellence in legal achievement” at its Legends in the Law awards gala in Washington, DC on June 12.

Partner Brian I. Swett and Associate Peter A. Siddiqui received the 2006 Burton Award for Achievement in Legal Writing for their ABI Journal article entitled, "Distressed Asset Sales to Insiders: What's the Problem?"

Messrs. Swett and Siddiqui, both members of the Firm’s Bankruptcy, Workout and Corporate Reorganization Practice, were among the 30 individuals selected by the Burton awards committee from hundreds of applications submitted by the largest 750 law firms in the nation.

In addition, the Burton Foundation along with the Association of Legal Administrators honored the Firm with the 2006 Best Law Firm Newsletter Award for its Winter 2005 issue of The Heart of the Matter – Pro Bono and Community Service News.

Created by the Firm's Marketing Department and Pro Bono Committee in the Fall of 2001, The Heart of the Matter is a semi-annual chronicle of Jenner Block’s many remarkable courtroom victories on behalf of the indigent, service to non-profits and other community service activities involving the Firm.  The attorney-co-editors of the newsletter are Partners Barry Levenstam and David W. DeBruin, both of whom are Co-Chairs of the Firm’s Pro Bono Committee.

Highlights from the award-winning edition include the Firm’s pro bono victory in the Baltimore fair housing case against the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, asylum victories on behalf of those escaping persecution abroad and an appellate court win in a lawsuit to curtail pollution in Lake Michigan.  Please click here to view the newsletter.
