Firm’s Commitment to United Way Continues with Successful Fundraising Campaign

Jenner & Block’s partners and employees donated over $250,000 to the United Way of Metropolitan Chicago after a successful two-week campaign in December.  The contribution represents a 73 percent increase over last year’s contribution, and will go to the 400 local charities, clinics and community agencies served by the United Way. 

The firm’s extraordinary responsiveness to pledge funds to help those less fortunate is inspiring, said Partner Susan C. Levy, Chair of the 2005 Campaign.  “These donations will bring hope to thousands of our neighbors, friends and colleagues in need,” she said.

On the final day of the campaign, the firm hosted an all-day jewelry sale by BUILD, Inc., a United Way-funded agency that works with at-risk children in Chicago to help them build self-esteem and life skills.  According to the agency, the sale of student-made jewelry proved to be its biggest ever, raising nearly $11,000. 

The firm’s 2005 United Way Campaign was the latest in a series of efforts supporting the agency.  Partner Elmer W. Johnson led a pro bono effort in 2004 to help consolidate approximately 50 area United Way organizations into the larger, umbrella organization: the United Way of Metropolitan Chicago.  It is estimated that this consolidation has resulted in millions of dollars of savings in annual administrative costs, so that more of every donated dollar will go to agencies that directly aid the needy.  Last year, Jenner & Block was honored by the United Way with its Growth & Innovation Award for the Firm’s exemplary 2004 campaign and for its pro bono work on behalf of the agency.
