Jenner & Block Associate Bryan D. King recently obtained asylum in the United States for a Turkmenistan woman who suffered persecution because of her association with individuals deemed to be political opponents of the Turkmen government.

The Firm’s client was denied employment opportunities and was subjected to multiple interrogations by government agents because she was associated with certain individuals.  The client then came to the United States on a student visa to obtain her masters degree.  At the client’s hearing before an immigration court,  Mr. King secured expert testimony that the client faced acute danger if she were to return to her native country.

As a result of the hearing and other evidence, the immigration judge agreed to grant asylum based upon the client’s well-founded fear of future prosecution.

Jenner & Block Partner Lawrence S. Schaner served as supervising attorney in this pro bono matter.
