Jenner & Block earned a 100% perfect rating for the fifth year in a row in the Human Rights Campaign’s (HRC) 2010 “Corporate Equality Index” survey. The survey is a tool used to rate American businesses on how they are treating LGBT employees. In 2005, Jenner & Block was the first Chicago-headquartered law firm and only the fourth nationwide to receive the HRC’s 100% rating.
The 2010 equality index ratings were based on six bellwether categories that assess such things as health insurance offerings to same-sex couples, diversity training that includes sexual orientation and/or gender identity, a firm-supported LGBT employee resource group or firm-wide diversity council that includes LGBT issues, and marketing and support to the LGBT community.
“Even in an economic environment that has presented new challenges for lawyers in private practice, the nation’s largest and most prestigious law firms have only stepped up their commitment to recruiting and retaining a diverse group of attorneys and staff,” said HRC Foundation President Joe Solmonese, in a statement. “Legal work in this country is deeply rooted in our nation’s core values of equality and justice for all, and law firms continue to set the gold standard for treating their LGBT employees fairly.”
“For major law firms and their clients, inclusive and fair practices for LGBT attorneys and staff have increasingly become the norm,” said Robert Falk, the HRC Foundation’s General Counsel. “Top law firms are aware that providing equal benefits and protections to their LGBT employees translates into a positive work environment and the ability to recruit the best lawyers. Moreover, in-house counsel routinely tell us that they look at the CEI law firm ratings when evaluating firms under consideration for their business.”
The HRC is America’s largest civil rights organization working to achieve LGBT equality. The HRC Workplace Project advises employees and employers on the value of workplace diversity. It collects, analyzes and disseminates information to assist employees and employers in implementing policies and procedures aimed at treating gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender workers equally.
