A gala reception honoring the many past presidents of the BWLA kicked off the inaugural Black Women Lawyers’ Association National Summit held in Chicago on March 8. The event, attended by over 250 people, featured inspiring remarks by Cheryle Jackson, CEO and President of the Chicago Urban League. Jenner & Block was a premier sponsor of this year’s national summit.

“It is with enormous pride and pleasure that Jenner & Block serves as the premier sponsor for this event and we hope that it is the first of many,” said Gregory S. Gallopoulos, Jenner & Block’s Managing Partner who gave opening remarks at the reception.

Kenyanna M. Scott, Jenner & Block Partner and BWLA Vice President served as co-chair of the National Summit of Black Women Lawyers with Nathalina A. Hudson, BWLA President and Assistant Corporation Counsel, City of Chicago, Department of Law. Both addressed the attendees at the President’s Reception.

“Twenty years ago, a group of African-American female attorneys gathered in the basement of Carson Pirie Scott to offer each other support, wisdom and guidance,”  Ms. Scott said at the conference. She noted the group has come a long way since these first steps. Ms. Hudson added in her remarks that the organization is now more than 300 professional members strong.

“I am honored to be in a room with so many powerful black women,” Ms. Jackson said in her keynote address. “But our work is not done. There’s room for more at the top. It is our responsibility to help others climb to the top of the ladder and stay there.” Ms. Jackson is the first woman to serve as President of the Chicago Urban League, a civil rights organization, in its 90- year history.
