Jenner & Block Partner Ross B. Bricker will be honored with the Florida Bar President’s Pro Bono Service Award for Out-of-State practitioners at a January 31 ceremony to be held at the Florida Supreme Court. Mr. Bricker has been a member of the Florida Bar since 1989.
In a statement announcing the award, the Florida Bar noted that Mr. Bricker has worked on behalf of poor and indigent clients throughout his career, handling numerous pro bono cases involving the First Amendment, freedom of religion, Section 8 and other forms of public housing, criminal defense, civil rights and numerous other areas of law. The Bar particularly recognized his precedent-setting work on behalf of migrant farm workers in Florida, his efforts to redress housing discrimination directed at persons with disabilities, and his representation of displaced residents of public housing in New Orleans in their efforts to return to the city. In the past 12 years, Mr. Bricker has devoted more than 3,600 hours to pro bono efforts, the Florida Bar noted. And in 2007 alone, he provided more than 470 hours of pro bono legal representation. The Bar also recognized Mr. Bricker's active volunteerism in trial advocacy programs and in his support of civic and bar organizations.
“Ross has always encouraged and inspired fellow attorneys to help those less fortunate, regardless of their ability to pay, have access to capable legal representation,” said Gregory S. Gallopoulos, Jenner & Block's Managing Partner.
“Ross is a person who deeply believes in each lawyer’s obligation to contribute his or her time and expertise to providing legal services to those in need in their community, and has lived that belief in his own practice of law,” added Barry Levenstam, Partner and Co-Chair of the Firm's Pro Bono Committee.
The Florida Bar President's Pro Bono Service Award was established in 1981 and is intended to encourage lawyers to volunteer free legal services to the poor by recognizing those who make public service commitments and to raise public awareness of the substantial volunteer services provided by Florida lawyers to those who cannot afford legal fees.
