On October 4, Jenner & Block Partner Matthew S. Hellman participated in a virtual roundtable on WTTW’s Chicago Tonight. The discussion focused on high-profile cases in the upcoming Supreme Court Term, including abortion access, Second Amendment rights, and separation of church and state.
When asked whether he anticipated sweeping or narrow decisions on these issues, Mr. Hellman said that it is useful to look back to get a sense of where the Court is headed, referencing center or ‘swing’ justices who determine 5-4 decisions. “Now the center justice has moved further towards where Justice Kavanaugh might be; whether that will lead to broader sweeping decisions is hard to know, but there are more ways to get to a broader opinion with the current composition of the Court,” he said.
