In an op-ed for The New York Times, Mr. Barofsky notes that Congress has demanded the same type of watchdog role that he performed as special inspector general of TARP during the last recession.  So far, however, “that dog is still in the pound.”  Yet the role is significant, Mr. Barofsky observes: “Perhaps most important, it would shine a bright light on the decision-making process within the Treasury Department, deterring policymakers from making decisions — which are likely to determine which companies survive and which fail — based on personal connections or cronyism rather than the merits.”  The op-ed is titled “Why We Desperately Need Oversight of the Coronavirus Stimulus Spending.”
