Jenner & Block Associate Joshua Rafsky has been named a 2011 "Best LGBT Lawyer Under 40" by the National LGBT Bar Association. The award recognizes “lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender legal professionals under the age of 40 who have distinguished themselves in their field and demonstrated a profound commitment to LGBT equality.”
The bar association’s announcement of the selections noted that the 40 individuals who were selected "represent the best and brightest in the LGBT legal community."
Mr. Rafsky is a member of the Firm’s Employee Benefits and Executive Compensation Practice and serves on the Associates Committee and the Associate Board of the Diversity Committee. In his practice, Mr. Rafsky counsels clients on a wide range of issues relating to employee benefits and executive compensation, including drafting qualified and non-qualified plans, resolving qualified and non-qualified plan issues, the benefit aspects of corporate transactions, health and welfare plan issues, Section 409A compliance and ERISA fiduciary obligations. He also assists clients with regulatory, administrative and compliance issues, including determination letters and plan examinations.
Mr. Rafsky also maintains an active pro bono practice. He has devoted significant time to helping the Firm’s longstanding pro bono client Vital Bridges (now a part of Heartland Health Outreach), a nonprofit that helps people throughout metropolitan Chicago who are impacted by HIV and AIDS to improve their health and build self-sufficiency.
Mr. Rafsky is an appointed member of the Illinois State Bar Association's Employee Benefits Section Council and recently became Secretary of the Chicago Bar Association’s Employee Benefits Committee. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of Heartland Health Outreach and a member of Lambda Legal's Chicago Leadership Council.
The award recipients will be recognized at the Lavender Law Conference taking place September 8 – September 10, 2011, in Hollywood, California.
