Featured speaker Sheila Simon, visiting assistant professor at the Southern Illinois University School of Law and former Lieutenant Governor of Illinois, spoke on the topic of “The Responsibility of Attorneys To Address Pervasive Societal Issues Why Law Clinics Should Care about Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault.” As Lieutenant Governor, Ms. Simon launched a virtual legal clinic giving domestic violence victims in remote areas of Illinois access to consultation by practicing lawyers via online technologies.
The University-Based Law Clinics Task Force will help law school students and clinical directors learn how tospot issues of domestic violence and sexual assault and ensure that clients get the appropriate resources. As Ms. Hotaling explained, clients who are victims of domestic violence and sexual assault may be seeking legal assistance for a range of other matters, from bankruptcy to immigration to veterans’ affairs. The task force will comprise more than a dozen leading practitioners representing a variety of different arenas, from non-profits to academics. Ms. Simon is an ex-officio member.
Chicago Says No More was established on April 28, 2015, by Mesirow Financial CFO Kristie Paskvan. This newest task force is the fourth to be organized by the organization.
