Partner Jessica Ring Amunson Discusses New Dynamics at US Supreme Court

Jenner & Block Partner Jessica Ring Amunson is quoted at length in an article that examines the political and legal implications of the death of Justice Antonin Scalia on the US Supreme Court.  Titled “All Eyes on the Court,” the article in Washington Lawyer explains that the justice’s unexpected death in February “has seismic legal and political ramifications.”  Ms. Amunson observes that “there is definitely a lot at stake this year in terms of important, hot-button issues like affirmative action and abortion.  With the vacancy created by Justice Scalia's death, there is the possibility that some of those cases could result in an evenly divided Court."   She also says that the justice’s death has changed the dynamics of the next election.  "It has put the Supreme Court front and center in a way that I don't think it's been in past elections,” she says.  With speculation focusing on Justice Anthony Kennedy, who will turn 80 this year, Ms. Amunson notes that he has not given any indication that he is retiring.  “But obviously his seat will be very closely watched. People are paying very close attention.”
