Jenner & Block Partner Jeffrey D. Colman will receive a 2014 Leadership Award from the Juvenile Justice Initiative  during an event to be held at the firm’s Chicago office on Wednesday, October 8, 2014, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.  Jeff and Cook County Board of Commissioners President Toni Preckwinkle are being honored “for their work ensuring individualized and proportionate justice for every child in conflict with the law.”

The event program highlights the firm’s representation of the first person in the country who was released from prison as a result of Miller v. Alabama, the Supreme Court’s 2012 decision that mandatory sentencing of juvenile murderers to life in prison without the possibility of parole constitutes cruel and unusual punishment.  Since 2012, Jeff has worked with the Coalition for the Sentencing of Children on issues relating to the retroactivity of Miller and on training lawyers to handle re-sentencing hearings under Miller.

Founded in 2000, the Juvenile Justice Initiative is a non-profit, non-partisan statewide advocacy organization whose mission is to transform the juvenile justice system in Illinois by reducing reliance on confinement, enhancing fairness for all youth and developing a comprehensive continuum of community-based resources throughout the state.
