Jenner & Block Partner Richard L. Stone has been named among the Daily Journal's 2013 list of the “Top 100 Lawyers in California.” Rick is profiled in the September 11, 2013 issue of the publication.
The Daily Journal’s list takes the entire state and all practice areas into account when selecting honoreesand seeks to honor attorneys whose work is changing an industry, the law or society as a whole. This year, the editors focused on how California lawyers are playing major roles in nearly every piece of national litigation or major transaction. “This has been the case for a long time,” the editors observe, “but it’s never unremarkable.”
Rick is recognized for his remarkable work in what the profile calls “one of the biggest battles in the television industry yet” – the battle against online television streaming services FilmOn and Aereo that transmit over-the-air TV signals digitally without paying licensing fees to the networks, including his client Fox. In fact, the Daily Journal’s “Top 100” announcement comes just a week after Rick and his team won a victory for Fox when the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia issued a preliminary injunction against FilmOn. The injunction applies nationwide except for within the Second Circuit, which previously denied networks an injunction in a similar case. With that circuit split, Rick speculates in the article that the U.S. Supreme Court may have to weigh in on the matter.
“Whether it happens next year or two years from now, I’m pretty confident that the Supreme Court will take it up. We’re hoping for sooner rather than later,” he says.
The Daily Journal recognition follows Rick’s being named a 2013 “Power Lawyer” by The Hollywood Reporter in May, for the second consecutive year.
