On October 11, 2012, the Illinois Supreme Court announced the appointment of Jenner & Block Partner John B. Simon to the Illinois Appellate Court. Mr. Simon will be sworn into his new position on November 1, 2012.
In becoming an Appellate Justice, Mr. Simon follows in the footsteps of his father, the late Justice Seymour F. Simon, who served as a Justice of the Illinois Supreme Court for eight years and as an Appellate Justice for six years. Mr. Simon fills a vacancy created by the death of Appellate Justice Michael J. Murphy who passed away on October 1, 2012.
In a press release issued by the Illinois Supreme Court, Mr. Simon noted, “It's an honor to have been appointed by the Illinois Supreme Court as a justice of the Illinois Appellate Court to succeed the late Justice Michael J. Murphy. He was a respected jurist who is greatly admired by me and all who knew him. I thank the Supreme Court for the confidence they have placed in me and I am humbled by the honor.”
A partner at Jenner & Block since 1986, Mr. Simon has handled many cases of major significance. For his work, he has earned recognition from such peer-review publications as Best Lawyers in America (for Bet-the-Company and Commercial Litigation), Illinois Super Lawyers (for General Litigation, Insurance Coverage and Alternative Dispute Resolution) and Leading Lawyers Network (for Civil Appellate Law, Commercial Litigation and Governmental, Municipal, Lobbying and Administrative Law).
In addition to his robust private practice, Mr. Simon has devoted substantial time to pro bono work and service to the bar and community. He currently serves as Chair of the Illinois Supreme Court Rules Committee and Chair of the Illinois Supreme Court Historic Preservation Commission. Other activities have included, among others, serving as President of the Chicago Bar Association, Chief Executive Officer and Chancellor of the Lincoln Academy of Illinois, President of the Lawyers Trust Fund of Illinois and as a member of the Illinois Supreme Court Planning and Oversight Committee for Judicial Performance Evaluation Program.
In 2008, Mr. Simon was awarded the Chicago Bar Foundation’s coveted U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens Award, which honors attorneys who “exemplify the highest personal integrity and devotion to public service.”
Mr. Simon began his legal career as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, where he handled a wide variety of civil and criminal trials, administrative matters and appeals. Appointed Chief of the Civil Division at age 29, he is the youngest person ever to serve as a division supervisor.
Mr. Simon’s appointment is yet another example of Jenner & Block’s commitment to public service. He joins a long list of Firm partners who have become members of the judiciary.
