“State and Federal Tax Issues for LGBT Families,” Chicago Bar Association LGBT Committee Meeting, Chicago, IL

Jenner & Block Partner Gail H. Morse spoke at the Chicago Bar Association’s LGBT Committee Meeting on the topic of “State and Federal Tax Issues for LGBT Families” on March 21. Ms. Morse discussed the Illinois Department of Revenue’s recent advice regarding the ability of same sex couples in a Civil Union to file an Illinois Joint Income Tax Return, the Department’s evolution on allowing the filing of joint income tax returns, the implications of federal law prohibiting the federal government from recognizing legally valid same sex marriages and marriage-like relationships under DOMA on federal income tax filing and the recent challenges to DOMA.

Ms. Morse leads the Firm’s State and Local Tax Practice. She is a member of the Firm’s Marketing and Business Development and Diversity Committees and also serves as Co-Chair of the Firm’s LGBT Forum. Ms. Morse is a member of the Board of Directors for the Illinois Women’s Institute for Leadership and serves on the Board of Directors of Lambda Legal. She is a former Commissioner on the Cook County Commission on Women’s Issues and a former Chair of WILPOWER, the political action committee of the Women’s Bar Association of Illinois.
