October 16, 2006

Jenner & Block Partners Andrew Weissmann and Paul M. Smith will speak at a New York City Bar Association program entitled, “The Future of the Thompson Memorandum,” to be held October 16 at the NYCBA headquarters in New York City.

Mr. Weissmann will moderate and Mr. Smith will serve as a panelist at the program, which will address the practical and legal issues raised by the Thompson Memorandum, a 2003 provision requiring all federal prosecutors to consider a set of principles in deciding whether to seek charges against a business organization.  Panelists will discuss how to defend cases in which the government relies on the Thompson Memorandum and how to develop the factual record to support a challenge to the Memorandum, as well as initiatives within the U.S. Department of Justice and Congress to ameliorate the Memorandum provisions.

In addition to Messrs. Weissmann and Smith, the panelists will include Hon. John Gleeson of the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of New York; Matthew Friedrich, Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General and Chief of Staff, Criminal Division, U.S. Department of Justice; and Charles Stillman of Stillman, Friedman and Schechtman.
