Jenner & Block Partner Debbie L. Berman will speak at a free educational seminar titled, “Our First Amendment Freedoms: Opportunities & Challenges in the Digital Age,” to be held Tuesday, August 19, 2008, at the Tribune Tower from 3:30pm to 6:30pm. The seminar, sponsored by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) in partnership with Chicago Tribune News in Education, will focus on how the application of the First Amendment impacts the lives of today’s young people. Jenner & Block is also a sponsor of the event.
The goal of the program is “to increase students’ awareness about the First Amendment and the importance of knowing and exercising our rights protected by the Constitution,” and will include a panel discussion addressing issues such as freedom of the press, freedom of student expression, protections for bloggers, and challenges in creating school free expression policies. In addition to Ms. Berman, panelists will include: Tim McNulty, Chicago Tribune Public Editor, and Randy Swikle, 1999 Dow Jones Newspaper Fund National Journalism Teacher of the Year.
Ms. Berman recently served as a judge in the “First Amendment Essay Contest” in Chicago, a related ADL and Chicago Tribune News in Education sponsored event. The contest asked high school students to “describe how one or more of the five freedoms listed in the First Amendment affects their daily life in the 21st century.”
A member of Jenner & Block's Media and First Amendment Practice, Ms. Berman has extensive experience in the First Amendment and defamation areas in both state and federal courts. She has successfully represented numerous media and non-media clients in defamation cases, and has successfully defended multiple libel cases for television and radio stations. She has also successfully represented media companies in quashing subpoenas to obtain outtake footage or testimony from reporters about their newsgathering activities, and has represented media entities in a variety of First Amendment matters including reporter’s privilege cases.
