On October 15, Partner Andy Bart presented a seminar in music business fundamentals as part of the New Works Composer Sessions for National Sawdust, a non-profit performing arts organization and music venue in Brooklyn, New York. During the live-streamed presentation, Mr. Bart discussed how compositions can be exploited and what licenses are required for each type of exploitation. He examined how the landscape is evolving rapidly as a result of changes in the law and the impact of COVID-19 – particularly the inability to present live concerts and the dramatic increase of streamed performances.
After exploring the core legal and business elements of the music industry, Mr. Bart answered questions about digital rights, co-ownership and fair use issues and other IP topics from the winners of National Sawdust’s New Works Commission – a mentorship program for emerging composers to develop both their musical and entrepreneurial skills.
