“Diversity of Thought and Respecting the Other Side of the Argument: Insights from the Office of The US Solicitor General.” University of Michigan Law School

Jenner & Block Partner Ian Heath Gershengorn, chair of the firm’s Appellate and Supreme Court Practice, presented at the University of Michigan Law School panel discussion “Diversity of Thought and Respecting the Other Side of the Argument: Insights from the Office of The US Solicitor General.”  The former acting solicitor general of the United States, Mr. Gershengorn joined other former solicitors general to share lessons from that institution on how to approach challenging discussions.  The panelists drew on the framework, ethos and practice of the office to discuss how students, faculty and staff can navigate controversial issues on campus and in particular listening, analyzing, tackling and responding to arguments on the other side.


Before joining the firm in 2017, Mr. Gershengorn served in the Office of the Solicitor General, first as principal deputy solicitor general and then as acting solicitor general of the United States.  His practice focuses on advising clients on a range of complex litigation and strategy problems, with particular emphasis on commercial disputes and challenges involving government, regulatory, and other public policy issues.
