“Criminal and Regulatory Liability for Assisting in Hiding Tainted Wealth,” 36th International Symposium on Economic Crime

Jenner & Block Partner Thomas C. Newkirk will speak at the 36th Annual International Symposium on Economic Crime.  Mr. Newkirk‘s talk, “The Stick and the Carrot,”  will compare the bounty programs offered by the US Securities and Exchange Commission and the Internal Revenue Service.  He will discuss the way that highly publicized bounties supplement the duty to report suspicious financial activities.  The theme of the symposium, being held at the University of Cambridge, is how to better identify and render accountable unexplained and suspicious wealth.  Mr. Newkirk’s session will be at 8 am on September 7, 2018.

Mr. Newkirk is co-chair of the Securities Litigation and Enforcement Practice.  Drawing on his 19 years as a senior official with the Securities and Exchange Commission, he represents companies and their leaders in confidential investigations related to such issues as accounting, disclosure, insider trading and the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.
