On April 30, 2018 the New York City Bar Association will host a panel discussion on the topic of professional athlete political activism.  Special Counsel David W. Sussman is Co-Chair of the Bar’s Sports Law Committee, which is sponsoring the event with the Office for Diversity and Inclusion.  The program will address the various legal issues that arise when athletes use their public profiles as platforms for social justice issues.  The panelists will explore the recent controversy in “taking a knee” by drawing on the knowledge of individuals with first-hand experience, including team and league executives, union representatives, athletes, agents and other sports industry professionals.
Mr. Sussman, a member of the firm’s nationally recognized Content, Media & Entertainment Practice, represents sports organizations, network, studio and online distributors, and media and other businesses in licensing, distribution and other agreements to use content. He also advises clients on litigation, mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures and strategic alliances.  He has more than 25 years of experience in legal and leadership positions at some of the most prominent companies in the sports, media and entertainment industries, including having served as general counsel and chief operating officer of the New York Yankees where he handled player contract negotiations, media deals, stadium lease and relocation issues.
