Jenner & Block

National Law Journal Names Jenner & Block to Its “Appellate Hot List” for 2014

The National Law Journal has named Jenner & Block to its “Appellate Hot List” for the sixth consecutive year.  The list comprises 20 elite law firms “with outstanding achievements before the U.S. Supreme Court, federal circuit courts of appeal and state courts of last resort.”  To be chosen, firms had to achieve “at least one significant appellate win since January 2013” and have an “impressive track record overall.”

A profile of Jenner & Block that was published on November 17, 2014, highlights the firm’s work representing Fox in the high-profile litigation against Aereo, at all levels from district court to Supreme Court; a significant pro bono bankruptcy case in which we won a unanimous Supreme Court decision for our client; the firm’s victory for the City of New York in a suit seeking damages from Exxon Mobil for contaminating city-owned wells with a gasoline additive; and the successful challenge, with the ACLU and Lambda Legal, to Virginia’s ban on same-sex marriage.

The profile quotes Appellate and Supreme Court Practice Chair Paul M.Smith, who told the NLJ, “For us, one hallmark is that we’re really good at teaming with the lawyers who worked in the lower courts and adding their value to ours as appellate lawyers.”

The article also quotes Gerson Zweifach, group general counsel and chief compliance officer for 21st Century Fox, who praised the Fox v. Aereo team, noting, “Paul Smith did great work for 21st Century Fox in the Aereo litigation, not only in developing the strongest arguments with Rick Stone in the district court and court of appeals, but effectively partnering with [co-counsel] Paul Clement in the Supreme Court on behalf of the networks.”

Partner Matthew S.Hellman is mentioned in the profile for presenting the winning argument in the pro bono bankruptcy case Law v. Siegel.
