Partner Andrew F. Merrick has been named the recipient of the Chicago Bar Foundation’s (CBF) 2016 Maurice Weigle Exceptional Young Lawyer Award.  The award is named in memory of two exceptional lawyers – father and son – who each exhibited a lifelong devotion to the law and the community.  The son, Maurice S. Weigle, was a Jenner & Block partner in the 1970s and ‘80s.  Specifically, the award is based on a lawyer’s contributions to furthering the ideals of the legal profession; making the organized bar an effective force for improving the profession and helping the community; and demonstrated commitment to pro bono and community service.

In his 10 years with Jenner & Block, Mr. Merrick has been unquestionably committed to these pursuits and has made a substantial contribution in all of these areas.  For example, within weeks of starting his career at the firm, he joined a team representing a pro bono client charged with first-degree murder, examined multiple witnesses at trial, and helped secure an acquittal for our client.  Since then, Mr. Merrick has devoted almost 2,000 hours to pro bono work, including regularly supervising and assisting more junior lawyers on pro bono cases.

Mr. Merrick has been an active member of the Chicago Bar Association (CBA) since early in his career, first helping to revive the CBA’s Securities Law Committee, which was nearly inactive at the time.  He became involved and largely through his leadership, the committee thrives today.  More recently, Mr. Merrick has turned his efforts to the CBA’s Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee, where he currently serves as a chair.

In addition, Mr. Merrick serves as board president of Compass to Care, an organization that helps needy families whose children are undergoing cancer treatment.  The organization’s founder, who supported Mr. Merrick’s nomination for the Weigle Award, told the CBF, “The impact Andrew is making for our organization, and ultimately for children who need help getting to cancer treatment, is tremendous.”

Mr. Merrick was presented with the award at the CBF’s Pro Bono & Public Service Awards Luncheon on July 18 at the Fairmount Hotel in Chicago.

Mr. Merrick is a member of the firm’s Complex Commercial Litigation, International Arbitration and Class Action Practices.  He represents corporations and individuals in a variety of disputes in state and federal courts and alternative dispute resolution forums across the United States and abroad.  His experience spans a wide range of subject areas including breach of contract, unfair competition, deceptive trade practices, restrictive covenants, trade secrets, securities fraud, products liability, and intellectual property matters, and a broad spectrum of industries, including defense and aerospace, pharmaceutical, energy, food and beverage, automotive and transportation, financial services, education, hospitality, and technology.  Mr. Merrick has been recognized by Illinois Super Lawyers as a “Rising Star” in the area of business litigation for the past three years.
