Jenner & Block Partner Andrew H. Bart is among only 10 litigators recognized in Billboard magazine’s annual list of the top lawyers in the music industry. The magazine highlights Mr. Bart’s twin victories in the past year: one in defense of rapper Jay Z in a sampling case and the other that led to the demise of streaming service Grooveshark. Both “were only the latest in a string of wins for the veteran litigator,” the magazine observes. Mr. Bart is quoted saying that “it’s still fun, because it’s not a cookie-cutter business.” The Grooveshark case was based on 2,807 copyrighted songs found on the company's servers. “The ultimate health of the industry depends on having rates that are reasonable enough to pay artists. Grooveshark perverted that,” he says.
Mr. Bart is co-chair of the nationally recognized Content, Media & Entertainment Practice. Clients in the entertainment industry, particularly recording companies, film studios and music publishers, seek his counsel on intellectual property issues and contractual disputes. His cases have resulted in precedent-setting decisions in copyright law, trademark law, the law of privacy and publicity, and artist-label relations. Earlier this year, he was named one of the top 100 entertainment “Power Lawyers” in America by The Hollywood Reporter.
