For the seventh year in a row, Jenner & Block has been selected for inclusion in The National Law Journal’s “Appellate Hot List.”  The 2015 list recognizes 20 law firms across the United States that, according to the NLJ, “represent appellate advocacy at its strongest – winning the big cases and changing the law.”

A profile of the firm published in a special NLJ report begins, “Jenner & Block’s powerhouse appellate practice left its mark in courts across the country – and on some of the biggest US Supreme Court decisions last year.”

Referring to the firm’s Appellate and Supreme Court Practice Chair Paul M. Smith as “a fixture at the high court,” the profile spotlights Partner Michael B. DeSanctis’ Supreme Court win in his first oral argument before the Court in the pro bono death penalty case of Brumfield v. Cain; Partner Catherine L. Steege’s win in her debut oral argument before the Court in Wellness International Network v. Sharif, addressing the constitutional authority of bankruptcy courts to enter judgments with the consent of the litigants; and a win for AOL Inc. in a defamation case argued by Partner Jessica Ring Amunson at the Texas Court of Appeals.

The article also noted that amicus briefs authored by Mr. Smith, Ms. Amunson and Partners Matthew S. Hellman and Matthew E. Price were cited in the majority opinions of some of the most significant decisions of the Court’s October 2014 term.  Commenting on the growth of the Court’s amicus practice, Ms. Amunson stated, “ … the justices really are looking to the briefs and citing the briefs for points that maybe they’re not getting from the parties.”
