Jenner & Block Partner Michael A. Scodro was inducted into the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers (AAAL) on November 9, 2015, in a ceremony at the US Supreme Court in Washington, DC.
Membership in AAAL is reserved for experienced appellate advocates who have demonstrated the highest skill level and integrity and is limited to 500 members throughout the United States. Nominations to the organization can be made only by current AAAL Fellows; candidates are thoroughly vetted by the legal and judicial communities in a confidential process. Nominees must then be elected to fellowship by the board of directors.
Mr. Scodro is one of just 12 AAAL Fellows in Illinois. Before joining Jenner & Block, he had served as the solicitor general of the State of Illinois from 2007 to 2014. In that role, he oversaw both the civil and criminal appeals divisions of the Illinois Attorney General’s office, supervising more than 40 attorneys in appeals in which the state was a party. Mr. Scodrohas argued casesbefore the USSupreme Court, state supreme courts and several US courts of appeals.
Earlier this year, Mr. Scodro was elected president of the Appellate Lawyers Association in Illinois. He was also elected a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation, an honor accorded to attorneys, judges, law faculty and legal scholars who have demonstrated outstanding achievements and dedication to the welfare of their communities and to the highest principles of the legal profession.
The AAAL induction ceremony took place as the final event of the Academy’s two-day annual conference in Washington. Immediately before the induction, Fellows attended the presentation of an award from the Academy to Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy. The award was presented by Chief Justice John Roberts, an AAAL judicial fellow.
