Each year, our goal is to recruit a diverse and talented summer associate class across our Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, and Washington, DC offices.  Our program is designed to give you a sense of what it is like to work at Jenner & Block, our people, work, values and culture.  We have designed a summer program that will allow you to experience the firm’s commitment to our clients, pro bono, training and development – all within a diverse and inclusive environment.  As a summer associate, you will have the opportunity to work on a variety of client matters, attend training programs and participate in social and community events.  We hope by the end of the summer you will know that Jenner & Block is the right fit for you.

In 2022, we will host 40 summer associates in our Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, and Washington, DC offices.

Summer associates are chosen based on academic credentials, relevant experience and the results of face to face interviews.  The process typically begins with an on-campus interview followed by a half day visit to  the firm.  Outstanding second-year law students may also submit their applications directly to the Legal Recruiting Department through our online system, beginning August 1.

Summer associates in our Chicago office gain exposure to the firm’s various practice areas and departments through participation in a “rotation system.” This system enables summer associates to experience life as a junior associate on litigation matters or in one of our transactional practices, including but not limited to: Corporate; Real Estate; Restructuring and Bankruptcy; Tax; and Environmental. Our summer associates get to know each other, our lawyers and the Windy City through social gatherings and community events. Highlights from previous summers include an annual volunteer night at "Cookies from the Heart," dinners hosted at partners’ homes, Cubs and White Sox baseball games and an architecture boat cruise down the Chicago River.

Los Angeles
Summer associates in our Los Angeles office have an opportunity to work in practice areas such as complex commercial litigation, media and entertainment company representation, intellectual property dispute resolution and corporate deals.  Beyond work, the program is designed to give summer associates the opportunity to get to know the office, its lawyers and the Los Angeles area through a variety of social and service events including a classic trolley tour, baseball games at Dodger Stadium, a family carnival and volunteer opportunities such as helping with family adoptions and low-income adults apply for public benefits.

New York
Jenner & Block’s New York summer program provides our summer associates with the opportunity to work on a variety of assignments and in the process, learn about daily life in our collegial office.  Our Summer Committee coordinates work assignments to ensure our summer associates receive meaningful work on projects matching their interests from a diverse array of practice areas such as complex commercial litigation; content, media and entertainment; investigations, compliance and defense; and corporate. Each summer associate is assigned two mentors (a partner and an associate) and is encouraged to work with as many of our lawyers as possible to gain a true perspective of our practice and culture.  Summer associates attend weekly lunches and training programs and also get to know our lawyers in more relaxed settings through social events such as museum outings, cooking classes, baseball games, and partner hosted dinners.

Washington, DC
Summer associates in Jenner & Block’s DC office work on the full array of matters that the office handles. Appellate, communications, content, media, and entertainment, energy, government controversies and privacy law are just some of the practice areas for which our DC office is known. Our summer program is also designed to help summer associates and lawyers to get to know each other, not only through work projects in the office but also through social events, including small group dinners at partners’ homes, museum tours, cooking and mixology classes and baseball games at Nationals Park.
