Consistent with Jenner & Block’s “One Firm” approach, lawyers in our New York office prize the many values for which the firm is known – including a strong commitment to pro bono, public service and exceptionally thoughtful and creative lawyering in the service of our clients.
Our People Our partners include a former general counsel of a Fortune 100 company who previously led the New York litigation practice at one of the nation’s leading firms; the former special inspector general of the Troubled Assets Relief Program (TARP) who authored the best-seller Bailout; the former chairman of Lotus Cars USA Inc. who also previously headed the New York corporate practice for a large national firm; two of New York’s leading copyright/entertainment litigators recognized as among the nation’s best in bothChambers USA and Legal 500; four former federal prosecutors; an author of the 1978 US Bankruptcy Code and one of the leading bankruptcy lawyers in the United States; and other experienced lawyers who focus on M&A, securities, private equity, corporate governance, bankruptcy/restructuring, and intellectual property.
Our associates are as impressive as our partners, drawn largely from prestigious federal clerkships, other leading firms and public interest organizations. We are also proud of our associate alumni who have moved on to the public sector: three of our New York associate alumni are now assistant United States attorneys in the Southern District of New York and Eastern District of New York; one left us to clerk for Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg; and others work at the ACLU and the New York Legal Assistance Group.
Jenner & Block’s strong commitment to public service is also reflected in our New York partner alumni; one became the general counsel of the FBI and is now Chief of the Criminal Division’s Fraud Section at the Department of Justice and another — who has since returned to us — served as special counsel to Governor Cuomo for Public Integrity and Ethics Reform. Jenner & Block alumni from other offices include the former Solicitor General of the United States and the Principal Deputy Solicitor General, who now serves as Acting Solicitor General, as well as in other important federal and state government positions; many judges were associates or partners at the firm, including retired Justice John Paul Stevens.
Our corporate practice represents clients in a variety of merger and acquisition, securities and private equity transactions and regularly counsels clients on matters of corporate governance and federal securities law. Our experienced New York-based corporate lawyers have handled some of our clients’ most critical transactions in a variety of industries, including automotive, defense and aerospace, financial services, investment management, life sciences, media, pharmaceuticals and technology. The integration of our corporate practice across offices assures our clients the highest level of service on their corporate transactions.
The partners in the office’s bankruptcy practice have participated in many of the leading bankruptcies of the past decade, and include former clerks in the Bankruptcy Court in Manhattan. They have particular competence in derivatives, structured finance and other sophisticated financial instruments and apply that knowledge in litigation and bankruptcy proceedings.
Many of our partners, in multiple practice areas, are recognized as highly accomplished by Chambers and other guides. Our associates are also a remarkable group, drawn largely from prestigious federal clerkships, other leading firms, public interest organizations and, increasingly, the office’s summer program.
